We love the selection of items in this 13-piece set. It does stick to core cookware essentials and doesn’t include other extras (such as steamers, racks or utensils). However, you can always add those other items as you go along, and chances are…you’ve already got them. We love that you get a range of shapes and sizes from small saucepans to a large stockpot and a versatile chef’s pan.

What’s it made of?
The main material comprising this cookware set is hard-anodized aluminum. This is a smart choice because aluminum is a great heat conductor and spreads heat evenly throughout the cooking surface.
The hard-anodizing process forces the aluminum to oxidize, creating a super hard, durable, non-reactive surface. This is only relevant to the exterior of the pans, as the interior is coated with a nonstick coating made from titanium and ceramic. This nonstick coating is free from PFOA and PTFE, eliminating the risk of nasty chemicals leaching into food.
Stainless steel also features in the mix, in the form of long handles, helper handles and lid handles. Stainless steel is durable, rust-free and surprisingly cool-touch when crafted properly, as these handles have been.
And lastly, we have glass, in the form of lids. The lids are made from shatter-resistant glass which can be peeped through so you can see if your water is over-boiling, your beans are drying out or your rice is done (among many!).
Best features
Oven safe: we love that each piece in this set, including lids, is safe for oven use up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you can use the stockpot for slow-cooking stews and casseroles in the oven after browning the meats on the stove (just one example).
Non-toxic: nonstick cookware can be rather dubious when it comes to toxic ingredients such as PFOA and the more controversial PTFE. The Gotham Steel 13-piece set is free from PFOA, PTFE and lesser-known PFOS. This is a big plus!
Tight-fitting glass lids: the lids are a wonderful feature because they are glass (see-through and sturdy) but they’re tight-fitting too. This is important because it locks moisture, heat and flavor into your dishes.

Anything to be wary of?
Like all cookware sets, it’s important to know what kinds of cooktops they are compatible with, especially if you have an induction cooktop. This particular set is not induction compatible, but it’s great for all other stove types.
Another thing to be aware of is that this cookware set is not the most non-stick cookware out there. You do have to use a little oil or butter to prevent sticking, and even then you might find a little bit of residue left to be scrubbed away. It’s not the kind of nonstick surface which has an egg sliding around without any butter or oil.
When it comes to cleaning, we think the best method is to simply hand wash instead of using the dishwasher, despite the “dishwasher safe” feature. This is so you have a better chance of preserving the nonstick quality for longer.
Who would this set suit best?
This set would be suitable for you if you are looking for a set which has a wide range of items for a reasonable price. If the non-stick is not crucial to you, then yes, this could be ideal. However, if the non-stick performance is of top priority to you and you need the most effective non-stick coating out there…then I would veer away from this set. I see this as a great set for sauteing veggies, searing meats, boiling pasta, simmering sauces and mixing gravies, as opposed to flipping pancakes, burgers, fritters, delicate fish and omelets.
Because you do get a lot of items for your money, and the base materials are of high quality, this could be a great set for a couple moving into a new home and require a “starter set”. It could also be a wise choice for keeping at a beach house or holiday home.
Final thoughts
The Gotham Steel Professional 13-piece Cookware Set is a sturdy set, but it does have setbacks to be aware of. It’s not the most nonstick set compared to certain other nonstick sets and may not be suitable if your home cooking regularly involves eggs and batter.
However, the variety of items is awesome, with frying pans, saucepans, chef’s pans, and a stockpot. It has the extra benefit of being oven safe (up to 500 degrees F), and it’s pretty attractive too! A great choice if you need a comprehensive set at a reasonable price.
