About Gotham cookware

Before we get into the big questions, let’s first figure out the “what, where and who” of Gotham Steel cookware.

Gotham Steel is a New York-based cookware brand with a collection of nonstick cookware. One of their signature characteristics is their copper-colored interiors. You may have seen them on your small screen as they’re an ‘As Seen on TV’ brand with various celebrity chef endorsements (not that those should be taken blindly without a thorough review!).

Gotham Steel cookware is marketed as a safe and healthy option for nonstick cooking, made with titanium and ceramic. But more on safety later…

What can you get?

Gotham Steel has a pretty great collection of cookware goods, from full sets to small collections to solo pieces.

Tip: If you’re moving house or simply need to completely replace all of your cookware and bakeware, they have a full 20-piece set to see you right.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you can get from Gotham Steel Cookware:

  • 20-piece cookware and bakeware set (pans, pots, baking trays…the whole works)
  • 5-piece cookware set (2 fry pans and a stock pot)
  • 10-piece cookware set (including a steamer)
  • Indoor electric grill, griddle and pitchfork
  • Square chef’s pans and casseroles
  • 15-piece set with utensils
  • Single frying pans and saucepans
  • Hammered copper cookware set (hammered copper exterior, Ti-Ceramic cookware interior)
  • Electric skillet
  • Mini egg/omelet pan
  • Sandwich grill

What is it made of?

Good question! What cookware is made of directly leads to whether or not it is safe.

The base material, or core, of Gotham Steel cookware, is aluminum. This is good news because aluminum is an awesome heat conductor and distributes heat nice and evenly.

But it’s what’s on top of the aluminum which is most interesting. Gotham Steel cookware is coated with a stick-free coating in a copper shade. The nonstick coating is called “Ti-Ceramic” which is a combination of titanium and ceramic.

The titanium component creates a rock hard, durable and super long wearing cooking surface. The ceramic component is what makes the surface nonstick. Does it contain copper? No. The copper is simply contained to the color scheme.

And the final material to name is stainless steel. The handles are made from stainless steel and are designed to be cool to the touch.

What it DOESN’T contain..and is it safe?

What cookware doesn’t contain is just as important as what it does contain.

Gotham Steel gets high marks in this category, as it doesn’t contain PTFE, PFOA, or  PFOS. These three chemicals (especially the first two) are the most notorious and avoided chemicals in cookware.

While PTFE (aka Teflon) isn’t necessarily bad, it can pose issues when subjected to high heats. But PFOA is a health hazard…which explains why it has been banned from being used in cookware in the USA.

Gotham Steel doesn’t contain nasty chemicals or heavy metals to leach into your food. Both titanium and ceramic are safe materials because they are non-reactive and stable (they’re not going to break down and put you and your food at risk).

You know where I’m heading with this…and it’s a big “yes”. Gotham Steel cookware is a safe choice due to the fact that it doesn’t contain reactive materials and the nonstick surface is made from stable ingredients.

The best features

Oven safe: we love that Gotham Steel cookware is oven safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Being able to use your cookware on the stove as well as the oven is a fantastic benefit which comes in handy far more often than you might think.

Some dishes require a quick jolt under the broiler, or an hour of “slow and low” oven time. It really helps when you don’t need to transfer the food from a stove-friendly pan to an oven-friendly vessel halfway through the process.

Dishwasher safe: yes, you can toss Gotham Steel cookware into the dishwasher when you’re done creating your masterpieces. The best feature for when there are too many dishes, not enough time, and certainly not enough energy to hand wash them all.

Nonstick: the defining feature of Gotham Steel cookware is the nonstick surface made from safe and non-reactive titanium and ceramic. Cook eggs, crepes, fritters, battered meats or veggies and tender fish without leaving half of it stuck on the pan.

Suits metal utensils: some nonstick cookware surfaces are delicate and require a soft utensil in order to preserve the coating. Gotham Steel Cookware is far more hardy than that, and welcomes metal utensils. This is a small-yet-powerful feature because sometimes the only utensil to do the job is a tough metal fish slice or pair of tongs.

Safe and toxin-free: the biggest question answered here is the question of safety, and the verdict is positive. Gotham Steel cookware does not contain PTFE or PFOA, both of which can cause some nasty health issues when misused…or simply used, full stop. Titanium and ceramic are safe, stable materials which you can trust.

Final thoughts

Gotham Steel maybe a somewhat “flashy” brand due to celebrity chef endorsements and As Seen On TV status, but it’s a solid brand nonetheless. And best of all, it is safe.

The toxin-free nonstick surface offers stress-free cooking without the iffy ingredients of other non-stick materials. Check out their range of large sets, small sets and individual pieces if you’re after a safe, nonstick cookware addition to your kitchen.
