Best Propane Smokers – Reviews

Our Pick

Cuisinart COS-244 Vertical 36' Propane Smoker, Black
Our rating:

Although not usually associated with outdoor equipment, Cuisinart has introduced a couple of smokers in recent years that are actually quite good. One of those is the Cuisinart COS-244 Vertical 36″ Propane Smoker.

This smoker actually has a couple of features that really make it stand out among the others. First of all, it offers a HUGE amount of space. There are 4 cooking racks inside. Each of them measures 14×14 inches. This means you can cook on 4 levels at the same time, or remove some of the racks to make room for a huge piece of meat. We also liked the fact that the cooking racks are made of stainless steel. This makes them much more durable than other alternatives since stainless steel is resistant to regular wear and tear as well as totally resistant to rust and corrosion. You can even wash these racks in the dishwasher which makes the cleanup much easier.

Another great thing about this smoker is that it has two doors. The larger, standard door at the front lets you access the food you are smoking. There is also a smaller door that allows you to access the tray for wood chips and water. Thus, you don’t need to open up the whole smoker when you want to add more water or wood chips. Finally, this smoker really does come with everything you need included. You even get a 40-inch hose and a regulator so you can attach your propane tank immediately.

Dyna-Glo DGY784BDP 36' Vertical LP Gas Smoker
Our rating:

This model from Dyna-Glo really shows how awesome propane smokers can be. Receiving many stellar reviews, this smoker quickly became a favorite in the scene when it came out.

The first thing that needs to be said about this smoker is that it’s very roomy inside. It comes with four cooking racks that give you a total of 784 square inches to work with. With so much space, it’s pretty hard to fill up this boy to full capacity. You could smoke a large brisket on the bottom shelf, for example, while still having 3 racks in use above it for smoking some smaller cuts, or sausages, for example. And this is just the standard model. If you find that this is not enough space, and you really want something huge, Dyna-Glo also makes this model in Large and Extra Large.

The smoker is powered by a 15,000BTU burner that’s made of cast iron and paired with an easy-to-use electronic ignition system. All the other details are also quite nice. For instance, we love how the area for the water and chip trays was designed. The chip tray goes right above the burner, and the water tray goes above it. They both slide in and out neatly like a drawer. In addition, you can also access this area without opening the whole door of the smoker.

Finally, to complete the picture, Dyna-Glo has also made sure that this smoker provides you with the ability to control the airflow with precision. The dampers at the top and on the sides allow you to seal the smoker completely or let just the right amount of air inside.  A custom-fit cover is also available for purchase separately.

PIT BOSS 77435 Vertical Lp Gas Smoker, Red
Our rating:

All other things aside, this is definitely a great smoker for the impatient cooks who can’t resist checking on their food all the time. As you probably know, opening the door all the time is really not advisable when smoking meat. Well, the PIT BOSS 77435 Vertical Lp Gas Smoker offers a solution. They put a large transparent window onto the front door of the smoker. This way, you can literally watch the whole process without disturbing the conditions inside. On top of that, there is a standard temperature gauge on the door to help you monitor the temperature also.

Other than that, this is a really nice medium-sized smoker. We find it’s the perfect size – not too big and not too small. There are three cooking racks inside that offer a total of 884 square inches of cooking space, which is quite a lot.

This smoker from Pit Boss is powered by a 12.500BTU stainless steel burner that easily maintains a stable temperature. The temperature is adjustable. The lowest temperature achievable is 100 degrees Fahrenheit for a long and slow smoking and drying process. On the other end of the scale, this smoker can reach as much as 350 degrees Fahrenheit which is quite high for any smoker.

Camp Chef Patio Cover for 24' Smoke Vault
Our rating:

The Smoke Vault smoker from Camp Chef is made for those who want a simple smoker that will allow them to get down to business immediately. The Camp Chef Smoke Vault is immensely popular in the tailgating scene, and there is a good reason why. This smoker boasts a simple design, but one that works incredibly well.

From the outside, this smoker looks pretty much like a vault, as the name suggests. Inside, you will find two standard cooking racks and a third one designed specifically for jerky (but also works for fish, for example). A wood chip tray and a water pan are also included and have their slots at the bottom of the smoking chamber.

With a total output of 18,000 BTU/hr, this smoker allows you to maintain temperatures as high as 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The whole unit weighs 75 pounds which makes it quite heavy, but if you make the effort, this smoker is perfect for camping in the backcountry. It also works great in a backyard, though. It’s so easy to use that it’s perfect for beginners.

Masterbuilt MB20050716 Mps 330g Propane Smoker, 30' Thermotemp
Our rating:

The Masterbuilt MPS 330G Propane Smoker is another propane smoker with a large viewing window. Being able to watch your food while it’s smoking is not only entertaining, but also very useful as it reduces the need to open the door and let the precious smoke out.

This smoker allows you to maintain temperatures in the range between 175 to 335 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that you can’t really do cold smoking with this unit, because it easily gets too hot. However, it works amazingly well for cold smoking. Try smoking a pork butt for a couple of hours in this baby and you’ll be in love.

The best thing about this smoker is that it is truly the “set it and forget it” type of smoker. It might take some time to figure out the right temperature, but after this, you are good to go. The smoker even has a unique shut-off valve that will shut off the gas if the flame is extinguished.

Best Propane Smokers – Buyers Guide

Propane smokers might not be the flashiest possible vessel you can use to smoke meat, but they do the job well. In terms of usability, these smokers stand in between charcoal and electric smokers, and we mean this in a good way. Just like charcoal smokers, you can use these units wherever you want – all you need is a propane tank. On the other hand, charcoal requires a lot of preparation. Electric smokers are much easier to set up, but they require a power outlet. With a propane smoker, you don’t have to worry about that and firing up your smoker is as easy as it can be.

But how do you know if a propane smoker is good or if it’s just a shiny exterior? Here is what to look for.

Size And Cooking Surface

Before setting out to buy a smoker, you should already have some idea about what you want to smoke inside. Is it fish, sausages, or something more in the direction of something like a brisket or a rack of ribs? If it’s smaller pieces you want to smoke, like sausages, fish, or jerky, just about any propane smoker will do. Certainly all those on our list will work quite well. However, if you plan on smoking large pieces of meat, it’s important to make sure that there is actually enough space inside.

Build Quality

All of the flashy features in this world are worth nothing if your smoker falls apart or topples over. This is why it’s important to choose a smoker with solid construction. Even though some of them can be lightweight, it doesn’t mean they have to be unstable. If you don’t mind the weight, choosing a smoker with the body made of steel will ensure durability.

Two Doors Are Always Better

One thing that can be really annoying on a smoker is not having separate access to your wood chip tray and your water tray. If you have to open a huge door just to do this, you lose precious smoke and the temperature inside the smoker drops every time you want to add something.

A common way to handle this is having a separate door at the bottom of the smoker that allows you to access your wood chip tray. Since heat travels upwards, you don’t lose too much of it by opening this little door.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a smoker can be a really personal decision. After all, you probably plan on spending a lot of time around this machine, considering that smoking meat is a long and slow process. If you don’t want to bother with the details and want a straight-forward recommendation, we think that you can’t go wrong with either the Cuisinart COS-244 Vertical 36″ Propane Smoker or the Dyna-Glo DGY784BDP 36″ Vertical LP Gas Smoker.
