Rice – one of the world’s most loved foods, but one of the hardest to prepare! If you are anything like me, when it comes to preparing things like rice and pasta, you always end up with way too many leftovers or not enough to feed everyone.
Well, unless you are using a packet of rice with specific measurements for a certain number of people, knowing how to conquer how much rice per person you should cook can be a very difficult task.
Not only can you end up with the wrong quantities, but making too much rice can lead to eating and serving too much to people without realizing it, or it can also mean eating too little and being left hungry.
So, I decided to look into it a bit more. If you are interested in not only how much rice you should cook per person, but how much is a normal and healthy amount for one person to eat, then look no further than this article!

How Much Rice Per Person
Knowing the recommended amount of cooked rice that the average person should eat is the first major question when it comes to preparing the correct amount.
Of course, this will depend on what the rice is being used for and what kind of diet you are on. Knowing how much rice is ideal per person is very individualistic.
If you are eating rice as the main carbohydrate of the meal, then most nutritionists and chefs would recommend having around one cup of cooked rice. If you are eating the rice alongside other carbohydrates, or with a lot of protein and vegetables then you may want to reduce this to around half a cup.
Similarly, if you are tracking calories then you can lower the amount of cooked rice to match this. Alternatively, if you are trying to eat more and hit a certain number of calories then you can increase this.
This can be slightly harder if you are cooking for a large group of people, but if you roughly stick with the aim of a cup per person then you cannot go too wrong.
If you are cooking rice for children, this amount should obviously be less. The average side dish of rice for an adult is half a cup of cooked rice and this is also an ideal amount if feeding a child rice as the main carbohydrate of their meal. When preparing rice as a side dish for children, aim to make around 1/4 per person.
What is the Best Way to Cook Rice?
Ideally, you should use a rice cooker to prepare your rice, however, if you do not have access to one then there are plenty of other ways.
To prepare regular white rice, the rule is to double the amount of rice in order to get the necessary amount of water needed. So, for one cup of white rice, you would need around two cups of water. This may need to be slightly altered depending on the type of rice you are cooking.
Start by rinsing the rice under cold water, and then toast the rice in a frying pan until you can smell a nutty aroma and the rice begins to go slightly golden. This helps to remove the starch, whilst giving a unique flavor to your rice, making the rice overall a lot lighter and fluffier when it has been cooked.
Boil the water with a pinch of salt and then add your rice and bring to a simmer. Alternatively, you can use vegetable or meat stock to add some extra flavor whilst the rice cooks and absorbs the liquid. Let this simmer for about 15 minutes and then stir and leave it to rest so that the rice can finish absorbing the moisture.
It is important to note that different types of rice will have different requirements in terms of their cooking time, but also I need slightly more water. If you end up with too much water though, it can always strain the rice once it is done.
How Much Uncooked Rice Should I Use?
So, because rice doubles in size as it cooks, it is important to half the amount of cooked rice in order to work out how much dry rice to make.
For the recommended adult portion of one cup of cooked rice, you should aim to use about half a cup of uncooked rice.
If you are cooking rice for a large group of people you should also stick to these measurements. So, if you have a party of 30 people, and each person is having rice as their main carbohydrate, you should aim to make about 30 cups of cooked rice, which will require about 15 cups of uncooked rice.
How Much Water Should I Use?
As mentioned, you will need about double the water for the rice. This means that if you are making the recommended adult serving of one cup of rice, you will need two cups of water or stock.
Keep these quantities the same, even if you are making a large batch of rice for a party of people. Using the example above, if you are prepping rice for 30 people you will need 15 cups of uncooked rice, and by doubling this you will need around 30 cups of water. Once cooked, this should provide around 30 cups of cooked rice.
It can be trickier getting the water ratio correct for smaller portions of rice if you are prepping less than a cup of rice. You can find out more about that here.
Cooking for larger groups may be tricker, and you can always add or remove some of the water as you go.
How much rice is provided for a party?
This really depends on the size of your party. However, adult parties usually consist of a combination of both men and women, and typically men will eat more than the daily average, and women will eat slightly less (in very broad terms).
This means that if you stick to the average of one cup of rice per guest, it should balance out to be enough for everyone to have a sufficient serving.
Rice is reasonably affordable to buy, so if you are worried about running out then it is definitely recommended to cook rice in excess of what you need.
How Much Rice Explained
So, the amount of rice per person really does depend on the meal, the person, and the level of hunger. However, if eating rice as your main carbohydrate and the base of the meal, a cup of cooked rice is the recommended amount.
If you are using rice as a side dish or preparing to cook rice for children, this amount should be halved.
Typically rice will double in size when cooked, which means you should half whatever amount of rice you plan to eat in order to work out how much-uncooked rice you need.
Once you have weighed out the rice, You should double this in order to work out how much water you need. So if you are cooking one cup of uncooked rice, you will need 2 cups of water and will end up with around 2 cups of cooked rice.
Getting proportions correct can be very tricky, and it may take some trial and error.
Start with getting portion sizes correct for smaller groups of people, and before you know it you will be preparing rice for parties full of people!
It is better to have too much than too little if cooking for others, however, it is also unpleasant to waste food. Try to stick to these measurements and you shouldn’t go too far wrong!
